Goucher Men's Golfer Julian Gonzalez To Participate In The Latin America Amateur Championships Starting Thursday
TOWSON, Md. – Julian Gonzalez (Heredia, Costa Rica/Berkley Academy), a member of the Goucher College men's golf team, will compete in the Latin America Amateur Championships at Casa de Campo's in the Dominican Republic starting on Thursday.
Perez will participate in the fifth edition of the championship with a 108-player field comprised of the top male amateurs in the region competing in the 72-hole, stroke-play event. An 18-hole round is scheduled for each day from Thursday-Sunday.
Gonzalez, a freshman at Goucher, will be one of four players competing for his native country of Costa Rica. The freshman has jumped on the scene for the Gophers, posting a pair of first-place finishes along with placing second and third in the four tournaments in the fall. He placed third in his collegiate debut with a two-round total of 143 at the Don Scalf Invitational and then finished second at the Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic with a two-day score of 144. Gonazlez then registered back-to-back two-round scores of 142 to finish in a tie for the individual title at the Revolutionary College Classic and then wrapped up the fall by winning outright the Landmark Conference Men's Invitational. Gonzalez has posted a 71.38 scoring average after eight rounds in the fall.
The winner of the Latin America Amateur Championships receives an invitation to compete in the 2019 Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, as well as full exemptions into The Amateur Championship, U.S. Amateur Championship and any other USGA amateur championship for which he is eligible. In addition, the winner and the runner(s)-up will be exempt into the final stages of qualifying for The 148th Open at Royal Portrush and the 119th U.S. Open Championship at Pebble Beach.
