Gonzalez Named To The NCAA Division III PING All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team
LEXINGTON, Kentucky – Julian Gonzalez (Heredia, Costa Rica/Berkley Academy), a member of the Goucher College men's golf team, has been named to the NCAA Division III PING All-Mid-Atlantic Region team announced at Golf Coaches Association of America Division IIII National Awards Banquet on Tuesday.
Gonzalez continues to add to his mantle with his sixth award in his freshman campaign. Along with the all-region selection, he was named to the All-Landmark Conference first team and garnered four Landmark Conference Player of the Week honors. In the second season in program history, Gonzalez is the first player in team history to receive all-region recognition.
Gonzalez, who shot an 81 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championships on Tuesday, came into the national event averaging 73.7 strokes per round in 18 rounds on the year. The freshman won back-to-back events in the fall with the Revolutionary Collegiate Classic on October 14 and the Landmark Conference Preview seven days later. He finished in the Top-3 in five events and the Top-10 in seven of the eight competitions on the year. Gonzalez carded five rounds under par including a career-best 69 in the opening round at both the Don Scalf Invitational and the Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic on October 7 and has eight rounds of par or below in his freshman campaign.
At the Landmark Conference Championships on May 5, he tied for the low score but lost a one-hole playoff on the ninth hole after unable to hit his birdie attempt on the hole. Gonzalez shot a one-over par final round to end the two rounds in a tie with Lucas Artigliere after carding a 145. In the final round, Gonzalez bogeyed four and birdied nine to go onto the back nine at even par. He then posted pars on every hole on the final nine holes except for hole 16 to end with a one-over par round of 73. In the two rounds of the championships, Gonzalez had four birdies, 28 pars, three bogeys and a double bogey.
Goucher will play round two on the Keane Trace Champions Course on Wednesday. The course is home to the PGA Barbasol Championships in July for the third-straight season. The Gophers will be paired with Oglethorpe University and the University of Redlands for the second round, but will be the last group of teams to tee off from hole one. Gonzalez will be the last one on the course at 1:30 p.m.
