Fisher Celebrates Birthday With Career-Best Round To Lead Goucher Men's Golf To Top Spot After One Round At Inaugural Spartans Invitational
YORK, Pa. – How does a Goucher men's golfer celebrate his birthday? For Nick Fisher (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) his birthday may not have been any better than shooting a career-best round to finish third and lead the Gophers to the top spot after the first round of the Inaugural Spartans Invitational on Saturday.
The sophomore, who shot had a career-best round of 74 in the final round of the Landmark Conference Men's Golf Championships in May, bettered that round by one stroke in the opening round of the season. Fisher posted a two-over 38 in the first nine holes thanks to bogeys on 5, 6 and 9 along with a birdie on 8. He then finished strong on the back nine for a one-under 35 with birdies on 11 and 14 and a bogey on 15. Fisher will go into the final day of his birthday weekend one stroke behind the current leader with a score of 73.
Thanks to having three players in the Top-6, Goucher will go into the final round four strokes ahead of Gettysburg (305) while York (307), Stevenson (313) and Rosemont (313) round out the Top-5 teams in the 15-team field. The Gophers started all five participants from the 2019 Landmark Conference Men's Golf Championship team and NCAA Division III Championships.
Julian Gonzalez (Heredia, Costa Rica/Berkeley Academy) and Evan Yue (Beijing, China/IMG Academy), who were both All-Landmark Conference first-team selections last season, are tied for sixth with a round of 75. Gonzalez shot a one-over 37 after a pair of birdies (3, 7) and three bogeys (2, 4, 9) and a two-over 38 back nine thanks to a birdie on 16 and three bogeys (10, 14, 18) to sit two strokes behind Fisher and three behind the leader.
Yue shot a three-over first nine after a birdie on 7 and four bogeys (2, 3, 5, 8) before an even 36 back nine thanks to a bogey on 10 and a birdie on 12 to sit in a tie with Gonzalez.
Roberto Mikse (Fort Worth, Texas/Jim McClean Junior Academy) (19th place, 78) and Steph Lee (Manalapan, N.J./Saint John Vianney) (26th place, 79) rounded out the Goucher five competitors. Both players registered a birdie on the day.
Miguel Reider (Mexico City, Mexico/Tecnológico de Monterrey) made his collegiate debut as an individual and sits in 40th place with a score of 81.
The Gophers will be in the final group of teams teeing off on Sunday in the Inaugural Spartans Invitational with Gettysburg, York and Rosemont. Lee will tee off from the first tee at 11:30 a.m. and will be followed by Mikse (11:39 a.m.), Yue (11:48 a.m.), Gonzalez (11:57 a.m.) and Fisher will be the last to hit the links at 12:06 p.m.
