Gonzalez Shoots A One-Over Par Round To Pace Goucher Men's Golf In First Round Of Don Scalf Invitational
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Julian Gonzalez (Heredia, Costa Rica/Berkley Academy) finished the opening round with a one-over par score to sit in 15th place and help Goucher College to an eighth-place standing at the Don Scalf Invitational on Sunday.
Gonzalez shot a one-over par in the front nine and then shot an even par back nine to finish the first round with a one-over par score of 73 to sit in fifth place, five strokes behind the medalist. The sophomore had a birdie on No. 4 and bogeys on No. 5 and No. 8 for a 37 through nine holes and then had birdies on No. 10, 12 and 18 along with bogeys on No. 13, 16 and 17 for a back nine 36.
Nick Fisher (Fishers, Ind./Fishers), who shot a career-low 73 in the opening round of the Inaugural Spartans Invitational in the season-opening event, tied his second-best low round score with a 74 to finish in 21st place after carding a one-over par on both sides of the course. The sophomore posted birdies on No. 1 and 6 along with bogeys on No. 4, 7, 8 and 13.
Evan Yue (Beijing, China/IMG Academy) shot four-over par with a 76 to finish the first round in 34th place. The junior had bogeys on No. 1, 2, 5, 16 and 17 and had a birdie on No. 18.
Roberto Mikse (Fort Worth, Texas/Jim McClean Junior Academy) (51st place, 82) and Steph Lee (Manalapan, N.J./Saint John Vianney) (56th place, 83) rounded out the Gophers team players. Mikse had birdies on No. 4 and No. 18 while Lee had a birdie on No. 1.
Joe Burns (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) (41st place, 78) and Miguel Reider (Mexico City, Mexico/Tecnológico de Monterrey) (51st place, 82) competed in the event as individuals. Burns had birdies on No. 17 and 18 while Reider posted birdies on No, 2, 7 and 18.
Christopher Newport and Rosemont lead the competition with a one-under score of 287, one stroke ahead of host North Carolina Wesleyan (288) while Averett (290) and Methodist (291) rounded out the Top-5 teams. Goucher sits in eighth place with a score of 305.
Goucher returns to action in the final round of the Don Scalf Invitational on Monday.
