Yue-Gonzalez Tandem Powers Goucher Men's Golf To Seventh At Don Scalf Invitational
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Evan Yue (Beijing, China/IMG Academy) shot an even-par second round to move into a tie with Julian Gonzalez (Heredia, Costa Rica/Berkeley Academy) for 17th place to help Goucher College move up to seventh place at the Don Scalf Invitational on Monday.
Yue posted a 72 in the final round after carding a 76 in the first round to finish with a four-over score of 148. The junior registered a double bogey on No. 3, but then recovered with birdies on No. 4, 5 and 8 to make the turn at one-under par. He then bogeyed 10 and 11 before ending the round with a birdie to finish at even par in the final round.
Gonzalez shot a one-over par round of 73 in the first round and then posted a three-over par final round of 75 to also finish with a 148. The sophomore carded a birdie on No. 5 and a bogey on No. 9 to make the turn at even par 36. Gonzalez then registered a bogey on No. 10, birdie on No. 12, double bogey on No. 14, bogeys on 16 and 17 and a birdie on his final hole for a three-over par round.
The duo finished four-over par with a 148 in 17th place, nine strokes behind the medalist who carded a five-under par score of 139.
Nick Fisher (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) posted rounds of 74 and 76 to notch a career-best two-round score of 150, six strokes better than his previous career low. The sophomore's 74 in the first round was his second-best round in his career. Fisher had bogeys on No. 2 and 4 in the front nine and bogeys on No. 13, 16 and 17 along with a birdie on No. 15.
Roberto Mikse (Fort Worth, Texas/Jim McClean Junior Academy) (49th place, 159) and Steph Lee (Manalapan, N.J./Saint John Vianney) (54th place, 162) rounded out the team competitors. Mikse recorded a birdie on No. 5 while Lee posted birdies on No. 7 and 13.
Averett rallied to win the two-day event with a three-over team score of 579, two strokes ahead of host North Carolina Wesleyan (581) while Rosemont (582), Christopher Newport (587), McDaniel (590) and Methodist (590) rounded out the Top-5 teams in the 11 team field. The Gophers shot a 305 in the opening round and a 300 in the second round to finish in seventh place with a 605.
Joe Burns (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) (45th place, 158) and Miguel Reider (Mexico City, Mexico/Tecnológico de Monterrey) (59th place, 171) participated in the event as individuals. Burns notched a birdie on No. 14.
Goucher returns to action at the Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic at the Bridges Golf Course in Abbottstown, Pa., hosted by McDaniel College on Saturday and Sunday.
