ST. MARY'S CITY, MD — Goucher's four-game winning
streak came to an end today when the Gophers suffered an 11-4
Capital Athletic Conference loss to St. Mary's (Md.).
The Gophers (5-5, 4-3 CAC) trailed only 2-1 at the conclusion of
the first quarter, but were outscored, 9-1, in the middle two
periods. Cyrus Albertson, who accounted for both of the Seahawks'
goals in the opening quarter, tallied his third of the contest in
the opening minute of the second period. His fourth goal provided
St. Mary's (8-4, 4-2 CAC) with an 8-2 advantage with 3:16 remaining
in the third quarter.
Pat Oliphant also scored four times for the Seahawks, who moved
past the Gophers and into third place in the CAC with the win.
Goucher dropped to fourth place and, with a victory over York on
Thursday, would still clinch a home game in the opening round of
the CAC championship tournament.
The Gophers were out-shot, 39-22, forcing sophomore goalkeeper
Austin Main (Berlin, MD/Stephen Decatur) to make a
career-high 19 saves.
Goucher's only goal in the first half was scored by Sam
Fitzpatrick (Littleton, CO/Arapahoe), his 13th of the
season. Brent Shea (Fallston, MD/Fallston) notched
an extra-man goal in the third quarter, and Bryant Boucher
(North Wales, PA/North Penn) and Dave Duff
(Westwood, MA/Suffield Academy) supplied the Gophers with
goals during the final 15:00.
