YORK, PA — Goucher overcame a 4-2 deficit at
halftime and defeated York, 7-6, today in the opening round of the
2007 Capital Athletic Conference championship tournament.
The victory not only avenged an 11-3 loss to the Spartans back on
April 12, but it also advanced head coach Kyle Hannan's squad into
the CAC semifinals where they will face top-seeded Salisbury on
Friday. The Sea Gulls were also victorious in a first-round game
today as they overwhelmed Catholic, 27-2.
The Spartans (5-8) led 3-2 after one period and Ryan Schab's
extra-man goal 3:32 into the second quarter provided York with a
two-goal advantage at halftime.
After being limited to eight shots the entire first half, the
Gophers (6-7) went on the offensive in the third quarter, scoring
the first four goals of the period to assume a 6-4 lead.
Dave Duff (Westwood, MA/Suffield Academy) not only
scored the goal that put Goucher ahead for the first time at 5-4,
but he also supplied what proved to be the game-winning goal when
he tallied an extra-man goal in the opening minute of the fourth
quarter.
York closed to within 7-6 on an unassisted goal by Kyle Henninger
with :21 remaining and then won the ensuing face-off, but was never
able to get off another shot.
Bryant Boucher (North Wales, PA/North Penn)
matched Duff's two-goal performance for the Gophers; Adam Cross
accounted for two of York's six goals.
