LATROBE, PA — Goucher turned a three-goal lead into
a more commanding six-goal cushion by scoring three times within a
span of :46 late in the third quarter today on the way to a 13-8
triumph over St. Vincent.
The two teams were knotted up at 2-2 after one period, but on the
strength of an 11-3 edge in shots, the Gophers (9-8) outscored the
Bearcats, 5-2, in the second quarter. Back-to-back-to-back goals by
Dan Flamholz (Baltimore, MD/Park School),
Dave Duff (Westwood, MA/Suffield Academy) and
Casey Hughes (Granite, MD/Mt. Hebron) provided
Goucher with a 6-3 advantage. The Bearcats (3-8) got one of those
goals back on an extra-man opportunity, but with only :07 remaining
before the end of the first half, Bryant Boucher (North
Wales, PA/North Penn) restored the Gophers' lead to three
goals with an even-strength goal that was assisted by Sam
Fitzpatrick (Littleton, CO/Arapahoe).
Goucher was ahead 8-5 heading into the final minute of the third
quarter, and it was at that point that the Gophers essentially
sealed the outcome with successive goals by Boucher, Fitzpatrick
and Flamholz. Ross Nochumowitz (Baltimore, MD/Park
School) picked up assists on the final two goals of the
period-ending run.
The Gophers, who prevailed in their final three games to end the
season with a winning record, had three players with at least four
points in today's contest: Flamholz finished with three goals and a
pair of assists, while Hughes and Fitzpatrick both contributed two
goals and an equal number of assists to the victory. Flamholz
concluded his four-year career at Goucher as the school's all-time
leader in assists (103).
