TOWSON, MD — An extra-man goal by Brent Shea
(Fallston, MD/Fallston) just :15 into the third quarter
snapped a 7-7 tie and provided Goucher with a lead it would never
relinquish on the way to a 13-10 triumph over Drew.
Shea scored an even-strength goal later in the period, which ended
with the Gophers (1-2) leading 11-8. The Rangers (0-1) closed to
within 11-9 early in the fourth quarter on a goal by Gil Arbitsman,
but didn't score again until Goucher built its advantage back up to
four goals. An even-strength goal by Sam Fitzpatrick
(Littleton, CO/Arapahoe) with 12:00 remaining made the
score 12-9 and and an extra-man goal by Alan Tiet (Aurora,
CO/Smoky Hill) with 5:32 left to play put the Gophers
ahead 13-9.
Goucher owned a 5-0 lead after one period thanks to a pair of goals
by Casey Hughes (Granite, MD/Mt. Hebron) and one
apiece from Dave Duff (Westwood, MA/Suffield
Academy), Dan Flamholz (Baltimore, MD/Park
School) and Fitzpatrick.
An unassisted goal by Ross Nochumowitz (Baltimore, MD/Park
School) just :21 into the second quarter boosted the
Gophers' lead to 6-0, but the Rangers were able to pull even at 7-7
by the end of the period on an unassisted goal by Robert
Budziszewski.
Fitzpatrick registered seven points in the non-conference victory
on four goals and three assists.
The Gophers, who took a 3-2 lead in the all-time series between the
two schools with the win, finished with a 45-28 edge in shots. In
goal, Austin Main (Berlin, MD/Stephen Decatur) of
the Gophers made 14 saves and Michael Celentano of the Rangers
stopped 11 shots.
