OWINGS MILLS, MD — Goucher, which trailed Villa Julie by as many as seven goals on two separate occasions in the first half, was able to knock its deficit down to as few as three goals in the fourth period before the nationally ranked Mustangs were able to celebrate a 13-9 Capital Athletic Conference victory today.
All the Gophers (1-3, 0-2 CAC) had to show for their efforts in the first 28 minutes of the contest were a pair of goals by junior midfielder Dave Duff (Westwood, MA/Suffield Academy). But even-strength goals by Dan Flamholz (Baltimore, MD/Park School) and Omar DuPree (Baltimore, MD/North County) in the final 1:40 of the second period reduced the Mustangs' lead to 9-4 at the break.
Villa Julie, No. 14 in this week's Division III national rankings, increased its advantage to 12-6 through three periods, but head coach Kyle Hannan's squad tallied the first three goals of the fourth quarter, closing to within 12-9 on a goal by Ross Nochumowitz (Baltimore, MD/Park School) with 5:54 left to play. Jimmy Dailey's unassisted goal with 4:05 remaining closed out the scoring.
The Mustangs (5-0, 4-0 CAC) finished with a 51-37 edge in shots. Austin Main (Berlin, MD/Stephen DeCatur) registered a career-high 18 saves in goal for the Gophers.
