WASHINGTON, DC — Goucher made it out of the first
quarter today with a 2-1 lead over Catholic, but then reeled off
nine unanswered goals on the way to a convincing 11-2 Capital
Athletic Conference triumph over the Cardinals.
Goals by Dan Flamholz (Baltimore, MD/Park School)
and Brian Hoge (Crofton, MD/Arundel) provided the
Gophers (4-4, 3-2 CAC) with a 2-0 lead, but the Cardinals got one
of those goals back when Bobby MacArthur tallied an extra-man goal
with 4:09 left to play in the first quarter.
By the time Catholic (4-7, 2-5 CAC) scored its second and final
goal of the contest more than 33 minutes later, the Gophers had
assumed an 11-1 advantage. Five different players scored goals for
Goucher in the second period as the Gophers stretched their lead to
7-1.
Flamholz became the all-time leader in career assists at Goucher
when he set up an extra-man goal by Sam Fitzpatrick
(Littleton, CO/Arapahoe) in the opening minute of the
fourth period. With the 94th assist of his career, the senior
attackman passed Phil Anthony (1999-2002), who was credited with 93
assists during his four seasons with the Gophers.
Fitzpatrick, Jake Fratella (Wilmington,
DE/Brandywine), Hoge and Dave Duff (Westwood,
MA/Suffield Academy) all contributed two goals to the
victory, which gave Goucher an 11-0 lead in the all-time series
between the two schools. Fitzpatrick also picked up a pair of
assists.
In addition to surrendering only two goals, starting goalkeeper
Austin Main (Berlin, MD/Stephen Decatur) of the
Gophers made 14 saves in 57:58.
