Two Goalkeepers Combine to Make 25 SavesMarch 3, 2007
SWARTHMORE, PA — One goal separated Goucher and
Swarthmore for the third year in a row today when Tyler Bradshaw's
unassisted goal with :31 remaining in the second overtime allowed
the Garnet Tide to secure a 5-4 triumph over the Gophers.
The Gophers (0-2) never trailed at any point during regulation as
goals by Ross Nochumowitz (Baltimore, MD/Park
School) and Dave Duff (Westwood, MA/Suffield
Academy) had them up 2-0 after one period and an
unassisted goal by Dan Flamholtz (Baltimore, MD/Park
School) made the score 3-1 at halftime.
Goucher assumed a 4-1 lead in the third quarter on a goal by
Alan Tiet (Aurora, CO/Smoky Hill), but Swarthmore
(1-0) closed to within 4-2 on a goal by Stelios Wilson with :04
remaining in the period. The Garnet Tide was able to catch the
Gophers thanks to an extra-man goal by Ryan McKenna and an
unassisted goal by Gavin Nurick in the fourth quarter.
The Gophers finished with a 38-34 advantage in shots as the two
goalkeepers combined to make 25 saves. Goucher's Austin
Main (Berlin, MD/Stephen Decatur) made 10 saves in
regulation and one in OT prior to Bradshaw's game-winning goal;
Swarthmore's Frank Mazzucco was credited with 14 saves, including a
pair in the first four-minute overtime period.
Today's game was the eighth in the all-time series between the two
schools and all five of Swarthmore's victories over Goucher have
been by a single goal. Last year, the Garnet Tide prevailed 8-7
thanks to a goal in the third OT.
