MADISON, N.J. - Goucher is viewed as a strong contender for the inaugural Landmark Conference men's lacrosse championship, the results of a preseason poll that were released today show.
The head men's lacrosse coaches and sports information directors at the member institutions which sponsor the sport were polled by the conference office, which produced preseason rankings which list Merchant Marine as the favorite to win the title in 2008. Tied for second place in the rankings are head coach Kyle Hannan's Gophers and Drew.
Merchant Marine, which earned its first NCAA Division III playoff berth in 2007, collected 48 points in the preseason poll, making the Mariners a unanimous choice for the top spot. The Gophers and Rangers both received 33 points in the voting.
The fourth spot in the preseason rankings went to Scranton (28 points), followed by Catholic (24) in fifth, Susquehanna (15) in sixth and Moravian (8) in seventh.
Juniata, the eighth member of the Landmark Conference, does not sponsor a men's lacrosse team.
The Gophers launch their 2008 season against Greensboro on Saturday. Their first Landmark Conference game is set for March 22 against Merchant Marine.
