April 16, 2008
TOWSON, Md. - Goucher ran its all-time record against Catholic
to 12-0 and, in the process, clinched a berth in the upcoming
Landmark Conference playoffs, by pinning a 13-1 setback on the
Cardinals today.
The 12 wins over the Cardinals represent the most the Gophers have
against any opponent in their 17-year existence as an
intercollegiate program.
The first three shots the Gophers (9-3, 4-0 Landmark) unleashed
produced goals by Sam Fitzpatrick (Littleton,
CO/Arapahoe), Dave Duff (Westwood, MA/Suffield
Academy) and Alex Boucher (North Wales,
PA/Germantown Academy), allowing head coach Kyle Hannan's
squad to assume a quick 3-0 lead. The Cardinals (6-7, 1-3 Landmark)
closed to within 3-1 on an extra-man goal by Mike Groh with 9:11
remaining in the first period.
By shutting out Catholic over the final 54:11, the Gophers held an
opponent to one goal for the fourth time in program history.
A man-down goal by Casey Hughes (Woodstock, MD/Mt.
Hebron) and an extra-man goal by Fitzpatrick in the
opening 6:38 of the second quarter extended Goucher's lead to
5-1.
Fitzpatrick scored a goal in all four periods. The junior
attackman's extra-man goal with 10:48 left to play in the third
quarter put Goucher up 8-1.
The Gophers finished with a 39-26 edge in shots and collected 47
ground balls, eight more than Catholic's total.
