MADISON, N.J. - Goucher was denied the inaugural Landmark
Conference title today when the Gophers lost to top-seeded Drew,
8-5, in the championship game of the conference's postseason
tournament.
The Gophers got on the scoreboard first, taking a 1-0 advantage on
an unassisted goal by Alan Tiet (Aurora, CO/Smoky
Hill) 4:54 into the contest. But, as it turned out, it
would be their only lead of the game. After Mike Sayers put Drew
ahead 2-1 by scoring with :30 remaining in the first quarter,
neither team scored again until Cooper Mazon (Littleton,
CO/Mullen) set up a goal by Dave Duff (Westwood,
MA/Suffield Academy) 2:59 into the third period, tying the
score at 2-2.
The Rangers (9-7) responded with three straight goals, taking a
5-2 lead on a goal by Jon Bucknam with 2:53 remaining in the third
quarter. The Gophers (11-5) got two of those goals back and closed
to within 5-4 on an unassisted goal by Alex Boucher (North
Wales, PA/Germantown Academy) with 1:50 left in the
period, but before time expired, Drew was able to regain a two-goal
advantage thanks to another goal by Bucknam.
The Gophers, who won more games than the 11 this season only once
in their 17-year existence, were limited to only five shots and a
goal by Tiet in the fourth period.
The Rangers finished with a 34-28 edge in shots.
