BALTIMORE, Md. - Goucher is picked to finish in third place in the Landmark Conference in 2008, according to preseason rankings compiled by Face-Off Yearbook that were released today by Inside Lacrosse.
With input from the seven head coaches in the newly formed conference, Face-Off Yearbook chose the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy to win the inaugural Landmark Conference championship. Drew is picked to finish second and Goucher third, with the rest of the teams ranked in the following order: 4. Scranton, 5. Catholic, 6. Moravian and 7. Susquehanna.
The Gophers won their final three games last season to finish with a 9-8 record. Along the way, they took on three teams that would become part of the Landmark Conference in 2008 and defeated all three: Drew, 13-10, Catholic, 11-2, and Moravian, 8-2.
Inside Lacrosse also released the publication's preseason all-conference selections and there were three Goucher players on the list: senior midfielder Dave Duff (Westwood, MA/Suffield Academy), junior attackman Sam Fitzpatrick (Littleton, CO/Arapahoe) and junior defenseman Andrew Nielsen (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven).
All three made significant contributions last season: Duff supplied the Gophers with 20 goals and two assists and led the team in shots (87); Fitzpatrick had a hand in 35 goals, scoring 18 times and picking up 17 assists; and only one player scooped up more groundballs than the 45 Nielsen collected.
The Gophers launch their 2008 season against Greensboro on Feb 23.
