Gophers Score First, Not Enough to Knock Off Bullets
GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) put Goucher on the scoreboard first by sticking the first of his three goals just 1:05 into the opening quarter, but nationally ranked Gettysburg quickly gained control of today's contest at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium by rattling off the next six goals. The Bullets (3-0) led 5-1 after one period and 9-3 at the end of the first half on the way to a 16-6 triumph over head coach Kyle Hannan's Gophers.
Lynch Interrupts Six-Goal Run by Scoring Twice in Second Quarter
GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council
Rock North) put Goucher on the scoreboard first by
sticking the first of his three goals just 1:05 into the opening
quarter, but nationally ranked Gettysburg quickly gained control of
today's contest at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium by rattling off
the next six goals. The Bullets (3-0) led 5-1 after one period and
9-3 at the end of the first half on the way to a 16-6 triumph over
head coach Kyle Hannan's Gophers.
Gettysburg's six-goal run carried over into the second quarter
before Matt Lynch (Ivyland, Pa./LaSalle College)
tallied back-to-back goals just 1:30 apart midway through the
period, reducing Goucher's deficit to 6-3.
The Gophers (0-2) were outshot, 13-3, in the third quarter, but
the Bullets, who sit at No. 3 in this week's Division III national
rankings, saw their lead trimmed to 9-4 on an unassisted goal by
Kyle Boncaro (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) at 10:28 of the
period and to 10-5 when Averett deposited his second goal with 3:51
left to play. But two goals by Joe Brody, the second one coming
with just :17 showing on the clock, provided Gettysburg with a 12-5
cushion heading into the final 15:00.
Nick LaBricciosa (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown
West) won 14 of the 24 faceoffs he handled for the
Gophers.
