SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council
Rock North) scored seven goals — the most in one
game by a Goucher player in more than six years — in leading
the Gophers to an 11-7 Landmark Conference victory over Susquehanna
this afternoon.
Averett tallied his first goal just 4:31 into the contest and his second with 3:37 remaining in the first quarter. An extra-man goal by Matt Lynch (Ivyland, Pa./LaSalle College) with 1:27 showing on the clock had the Gophers (6-3, 1-0 Landmark) up 3-0 through one period.
The sophomore attackman struck again, sticking an unassisted goal 2:22 into the second quarter to give Goucher a 4-0 cushion, before the Crusaders (5-4, 0-1 Landmark) got on the scoreboard for the first time on a goal by Dustin Breakey. Averett scored two more times in the period as the Gophers extended their lead to 7-3 at the end of the first half.
Two more unassisted goals by Averett in the third period made the score 9-3, although Breakey got one back for Susquehanna with :55 showing on the clock.
The Crusaders closed to within 10-7 in the fourth quarter before an extra-man goal by Mike Russo (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) of the Gophers with :34 remaining concluded the scoring.
The last time a Goucher player scored seven or more goals in a game was the nine-goal performance by Pat Tracy in a 20-4 triumph over York back on March 10, 2004.
Nick LaBricciosa (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) won 13 of the 22 face-offs he attempted for Goucher and David Jadin (Chanhassen, Minn./The Blake School) helped the Gophers achieve a 36-29 advantage in ground balls by coming up with 10 of them.
