TOWSON, Md. — With Kyle Boncaro (Geneva,
N.Y./Geneva) and Rory Averett (Ivyland,
Pa./Council Rock North) both contributing four goals,
Goucher matched the longest winning streak in the 19-year history
of its men's lacrosse program today when the Gophers defeated
Moravian, 17-6, in front of a crowd of 300 in Gopher Stadium.
The win was the sixth straight for head coach Kyle Hannan's Gophers, who have also been victorious 11 times in their past 12 games. Goucher previously strung together six consecutive wins during the 2001 season and again when they concluded the 2007 season with three straight wins and got off to a 3-0 start in 2008.
The combination of the victory over the Greyhounds and Drew's 8-7 loss to Susquehanna this afternoon leaves Goucher in sole possession of first place in the Landmark Conference. Still, the Gophers and Rangers will settle which is the No. 1 seed and which is No. 2 in the conference's upcoming postseason tournament when they clash next weekend in Madison, N.J.
Boncaro scored twice and Jacob Fratella (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine), Matt Lynch (Ivyland, Pa./LaSalle College) and Jackson Lane (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) notched one goal apiece as the Gophers (11-3, 5-0 Landmark) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one period.
Boncaro put the Gophers up 6-0 with an unassisted goal 2:26 into the second quarter and Averett followed with back-to-back goals before the Greyhounds (1-13, 0-6 Landmark) got on the scoreboard for the first time on a goal by Robert Devine with 2:45 remaining before halftime.
Boncaro's fourth goal of the contest provided Goucher with a 12-1 advantage in the third period. Averett tallied his fourth goal of the day and team-leading 41st of the season 1:15 into the fourth quarter.
Nine different players scored goals for Goucher. Fratella and Gavin Loney (Linthicum, Md./North County) both struck a pair, while Lane, Lynch, Chris Argonish (New Brunswick, N.J./St. Joseph), Kyle Borsody (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) and Keith Delaney (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) added one apiece.
In addition to his four goals, Boncaro was awarded five assists, giving him a team-leading total of 55 points this season. Fratella picked up three assists, two of them on goals by Averett.
Devine finished with three goals for Moravian.
