March 8, 2009
TOWSON, Md. – With Kyle Boncaro (Geneva,
N.Y./Geneva) having a hand in eight of the goals, Goucher
made the most of a 26-shot attack this afternoon to record a 13-9
non-conference victory over Wooster.
The only point Boncaro collected in the first period was an assist
on an extra-man goal by Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council
Rock North) with 1:39 remaining that left the two teams
tied at 3-3 after 15:00. In the second quarter, the Gophers
outscored the Fighting Scots, 6-2, and the freshman attackman not
only scored three times, but he also set up goals by Jake
Fratella (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) and Averett. An
unassisted goal by Brian Hoge (Crofton,
Md./Arundel) with :26 showing on the clock boosted
Goucher's lead to 9-5 at halftime.
The Gophers (3-1) went ahead 10-5 on an unassisted goal by
Alex Boucher (North Wales, Pa./Germantown Academy)
3:53 into the third quarter, but the Fighting Scots (2-1) responded
with three straight goals – including Tim Lee's third and
fourth of day – to make the score 10-8 heading into the
fourth period.
Hoge's unassisted goal with 9:37 remaining restored Goucher's lead
to three goals and Boncaro concluded his five-goal, three-assist
performance with a pair of goals just :32 apart to put the Gophers
ahead 13-8 with 3:01 left to play.
The Fighting Scots unleashed a total of 33 shots, forcing senior
goalkeeper Austin Main (Berlin, Md./Stephen
Decatur) of the Gophers to make 11 saves.
