TOWSON, Md. – Kyle Boncaro (Geneva,
N.Y./Geneva) scored four times – including
back-to-back-to-back goals in a span of 3:59 in the second period
– and handed out a pair of assists to help Goucher conclude
an early-season four-game homestand today with a convincing 19-6
triumph over Trine.
With the win, the Gophers (4-1) matched their best start to a season after five games. They also broke out of the gates with four wins in their first five games in 1995, 2001 and 2008.
The Thunder (0-4) trailed 3-1 after 15:00 and were down only 6-2 in the second quarter when Boncaro stuck an unassisted goal with 4:26 remaining before halftime. Exactly one minute later, Sam Fitzpatrick (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) was awarded an assist on a goal by Boncaro. And then with just :27 showing on the clock, the freshman attackman tallied his team-leading 15th goal of the season to provide the Gophers with a 9-2 lead at the break.
Just :22 into the third quarter, Boncaro completed his four-goal, two-assist performance by setting up an extra-man goal by Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) that made the score 10-2 in Goucher's favor.
Eleven different players contributed at least one goal to the victory. In addition to Boncaro, multiple-goal scorers for Goucher were Brian Hoge (Crofton, Md./Arundel) with three and Fitzpatrick, Averett and Chris Argonish (New Brunswick, N.J./St. Joseph) with two apiece.
Cory Childs and Dan Giorgis both scored twice for Trine.
The Gophers finished with a 44-22 advantage in shots and a 53-30 edge in ground balls. Nick LaBricciosa (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) won 17 of the 21 faceoffs he attempted for Goucher.
