NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Goucher didn't trail at the end of the
first quarter in any of its first five games of the season. In
fact, in only one of those games did the Gophers fall behind at any
point in the opening period.
Tonight, however, Plattsburgh St. outscored head coach Kyle Hannan's squad, 4-0, in the first 15:00 and notched the first two goals of the second period. The Gophers never were able to overcome the six-goal deficit they were in after 18:08 and wound up losing to the Cardinals, 17-7.
The 17 goals is the most of the Gophers have surrendered to a non-conference opponent since they were beaten by Haverford, 18-8, back in 1999.
Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) got the Gophers on the scoreboard for the first time against the Cardinals (4-1) when he stuck an unassisted goal 4:59 into the second quarter. Thanks to a pair of goals by Brian Hoge (Crofton, Md./Arundel) in the final 3:46 of the period, Goucher was down just 7-3 at the half.
Averett tallied Goucher's only goal in the third quarter, which ended with the Cardinals up 11-4.
After the Gophers (4-2) closed to within 12-7 on an unassisted goal by Sam Fitzpatrick (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe), Plattsburgh St. reeled off five unanswered goals over the final 5:11 to close out the scoring in the first men's lacrosse game between the two schools ever played.
The Cardinals finished with a 47-36 advantage in shots.
