Ungar, Miller Preside Over Dedication Ceremonies
TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's intercollegiate athletic teams, along with many of the institution's club and intramural sports programs, have been practicing and playing on the new synthetic turf and under the lights at Beldon Field for more than a month, and today many of the people that made these improvements possible were recognized at halftime of a Landmark Conference women's soccer game between the Gophers and Susquehanna.

Intercollegiate Teams Share Turf Field with Club, Intramual Programs

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's intercollegiate athletic teams,
along with many of the institution's club and intramural sports
programs, have been practicing and playing on the new synthetic
turf and under the lights at Beldon Field for more than a month,
and today many of the people that made these improvements possible
were recognized at halftime of a Landmark Conference women's soccer
game between the Gophers and Susquehanna.
President Sanford J. Ungar and Athletic Director Geoffery Miller presided over a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony in front of the bleachers after the two teams departed the field still locked in a scoreless tie. The two college officials were joined by Henry Rosenberg Jr., Ron and Kere' Averett and David and Dover Bull, who all played major roles in making the project happen.
Every member of the women's soccer team joined the ceremony as it was drawing to a close to cut a ribbon. Among those who witnessed the event, in addition to those people there to attend the women's soccer game, were Goucher's men's and women's lacrosse teams and dozens of alumnae/i who returned to campus on Family Weekend.
"The (turf) field shows student-athletes the college's commitment to athletics, gives a sense of pride for alumni and, most importantly, will be used by all students through intramurals and club sports for years to come," said Miller.
As part of the ceremony, Miller presented President Ungar a felt varsity letter on behalf of all the student-athletes for ultimately deciding to give a bulk of a $3.7 million bequest from the late Alonzo and Virginia Decker to athletics for the makeover of Beldon Field and the strength and conditioning center currently under construction in the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
