TOWSON, Md. — Goucher led Frostburg State, 7-1, after the first quarter and outscored the Bobcats, 7-0, during the middle two periods on the way to its first victory of the season, an 18-4 triumph this afternoon on Beldon Field.
While seven different players got into the scoring act for the Gophers during the first three periods, an even-strength goal by Dan Dowd was all the scoring the Bobcats (2-3) could muster for the first 45 minutes against sophomore goalkeeper Connor Mishaw (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine), who played into the fourth quarter and finished with three saves.
Zach Fratella (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) and Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) both scored twice for Goucher in the first quarter and Pat Peddicord (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) stuck a pair of goals in the second period as the Gophers (1-3) extended their lead to 10-1 by halftime.
Averett, who turned in a five-goal, two-assist performance, tallied an unassisted goal with :03 remaining in the third quarter to put Goucher up 14-1.
Dowd's extra-man goal 5:20 into the fourth period ended a string of 11 consecutive goals by the Gophers, who finished with a 44-20 advantage in shots in the first-ever meeting between the two schools in the sport of men's lacrosse.
Averett was one of four players with multiple goals for Goucher: Fratella tallied three times, Matt Lynch (Ivyland, Pa./LaSalle College) had two goals to go along with three assists, and, the two goals Peddicord scored in the second quarter followed an assist he had on a man-down goal by Fratella in the opening period.
Ralph Bilotta (East Rockaway, N.Y./Lynbrook) led the Gophers in ground balls (5) and caused turnovers (3).
