Captains Go Down with Ship Thanks to Near-Perfect Mishaw

Career-High 15 Saves, Two Goals Allowed for Sophomore GK

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Connor Mishaw (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) wasn't perfect in goal for Goucher against Christopher Newport today.

Just pretty darn close.

The sophomore goalkeeper surrendered two goals less than a minute apart late in the second period. Prior to getting beat by Chase Walton with 2:11 remaining before halftime, Mishaw had already racked up seven saves.

Just :56 after Walton's unassisted goal, the Captains scored again, this time a goal by Matt Gleisner that was assisted by Teddy Pakalski.

The rest of the way, however, nothing got by Mishaw. Not just during the final 1:15 of the second quarter, but throughout the entire second half, as well. He finished with a career-high 15 saves in leading the Gophers past the Captains, 10-2.

The Gophers (6-4) were outshot, 8-5, in the opening period, but led 2-0 after 15 minutes thanks to unassisted goals by junior attackman Kyle Boncaro (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) and sophomore midfielder Zach Fratella (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine).

Boncaro tallied a second goal and picked up an assist on a goal by freshman attackman George Skelos (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) in the second quarter, during which the Gophers were also presented with two extra-man opportunities that produced man-up goals by freshman attackman Max Roach (Austin, Texas/Austin) and junior midfielder Matt Lynch (Ivyland, Pa./LaSalle College).

The back-to-back goals by Walton and Gleisner allowed the Captains (5-4) to close to within 6-2, which was the score at halftime.

Midway through the third quarter, Boncaro set up a goal by junior attackman Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North), who now has scored at least one goal in 41 of the 43 games he's played during his three seasons at Goucher. Boncaro completed a three-goal, two-assist performance with an unassisted goal in the final minute of the period for his fourth five-point effort of the 2011 campaign.

Lynch had a goal and an assist in the fourth quarter for the Gophers, who have reeled off five straight wins since an 11-9 loss to Colorado College back on March 12.
