Conference Recognizes Junior Attackman, Sophomore Defenseman
MADISON, N.J. — Goucher players were recipients of both of the weekly honors the Landmark Conference dished out today in the sport of men's lacrosse: junior attackman Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) was named Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore defenseman Paul Taylor (San Antonio, Texas/St. Mary's Hall) was selected Defensive Player of the Week for March 21-27.
Averett supplied the Gophers with 11 goals and an assist in the three games they played during the seven-day period. He tallied five goals in a 12-6 triumph over Washington & Jefferson, followed that up with a four-goal, one-assist performance in the 12-7 victory over Otterbein and concluded the week by sticking two goals in a 10-2 win over Christopher Newport.
One of only five players in the history of Goucher's men's lacrosse program to surpass 100 goals in his career, Averett is leading the team in goals (32) and points (39) through 10 games this season.
During the same three-game in which Averett averaged 4.0 points per contest, Taylor was credited with 17 ground balls and five caused turnovers. He picked up eight ground balls against Otterbein, matching his career-high one-game total, and all five of the turnovers he caused were in Goucher's decisive victory over Christopher Newport.
Taylor's team-high totals after 10 games: 33 ground balls and a 25 caused turnovers.
