GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Goucher finished strongly, scoring three times in the final 1:48, but the Gophers still suffered their first loss of the season as they fell to nationally ranked Gettysburg, 8-5, this afternoon on Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Gettysburg, which came in at No. 15 in this week's Division III national rankings by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, led 3-1 after one period. In the second quarter, the Gophers (3-1) outshot the Bullets, 16-1, but out of that advantage came only a goal by Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) that made the score 3-2 after 30 minutes.
The Bullets (2-0) unleashed a total of 17 shots in the third quarter and managed to add four goals to their total. After an extra-man goal by Caldwell Rohrback 4:27 into the period provided the home team with a 4-2 cushion, Martin Manilla stuck three consecutive goals during a span of just over two minutes to pad the lead to 7-2 heading into the final 15 minutes.
The Gophers entered the final two minutes trailing 8-2, but made the final score more respectable with goals by Zachary Fratella (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine), Averett and Kyle Boncaro (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) down the stretch.
Goucher finished with a 39-35 edge in shots, but the Bullets held the upper hand in ground balls, 37-18, and won 12 faceoffs compared to five for the Gophers.
Both starting goalkeepers went the distance. For Goucher, Connor Mishaw (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) made 10 saves in the second half, raising his total for the game to 14; J.T. McCook made plays on 12 of the shots the Gophers took.
