TOWSON, Md. — Goucher broke open a tight game by outscoring Randolph-Macon, 5-0, in the third quarter and went on to defeat the Yellow Jackets, 13-5, this afternoon on Beldon Field.
The Gophers, who just three days earlier had suffered their first loss of the season when they bowed to No. 15 Gettysburg, 8-5, never trailed in today's contest and opened up a 3-0 lead on even-strength goals by Zachary Fratella (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine), Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) and Max Roach (Austin, Texas/Austin). The Yellow Jackets (2-2) got one back on Brett Austin's man-up goal with 3:07 left to play in the first quarter, but before time expired in the period, Goucher regained a three-goal advantage on another goal by Roach.
An unassisted goal by Matt Lynch (Ivyland, Pa./LaSalle College) accounted for all of the Gophers' scoring in the second quarter, but head coach Kyle Hannan's squad still enjoyed a 5-3 lead after 30 minutes.
Kyle Boncaro (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) bunched all three of the goals he contributed to the victory into the third quarter, beginning with an extra-man goal three minutes into the period that made the score 6-3. After another unassisted goal by Lynch, Boncaro stuck two more goals just 29 seconds apart to provide the Gophers (4-1) with a 9-3 cushion.
Averett's even-strength goal with 2:55 to play in the third quarter bumped Goucher's lead up to 10-3 heading into the final stanza.
Averett, who added an extra-man goal in the fourth period, and Boncaro both finished with three goals for the Gophers. Lynch, Fratella and Roach tallied two apiece and Sam Morgan (Wilmot, N.H./Kearsarge Regional) tallied his only goal of the contest with 32 seconds remaining.
Lynch picked up assists on three of Goucher's 13 goals. Averett and Sam Woodruff (Glen Ridge, N.J./Kent School) were both awarded a pair of assists and Jackson Lane (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) set up Morgan's goal that concluded the scoring.
Connor Mishaw (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) was solid in goal again for the Gophers, making a total of 14 saves. Today's performance raised the junior goalkeeper's save percentage for the season to .688.
