Third Time in History Goucher Scores Six Goals, Still Wins

FROSTBURG, Md. — Goucher never held more than a one-goal lead over Frostburg St. this afternoon until the third quarter, but by limiting the Bobcats to one goal over the final 38:50, the Gophers were at least able to emerge with a 6-3 victory.

Kyle Boncaro (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva), who accounted for Goucher's only goal in the first quarter, put the Gophers (5-1) ahead to stay when he tallied his team-leading 18th goal of the season with 6:24 remaining before halftime. That made the score 3-2.

Unassisted goals by Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) and Matt Lynch (Ivyland, Pa./LaSalle College) in the third period hiked the lead up to 5-2. Goucher went up 6-2 when Averett added his 17th goal of the season 2:26 into the fourth quarter.

Ryan Serio closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal for the Bobcats (2-3) with 8:43 left to play.

The Gophers got off at least 10 shots in every period except the second and finished with a 43-26 advantage in that category. The Bobcats, however, achieved an edge in ground balls, 44-35, and won eight of the 12 faceoffs.

Both starting goalkeepers delivered solid performances, playing all 60 minutes. For Goucher, Connor Mishaw (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) was credited with nine saves; for Forstburg, Tyler Haines stopped 14 shots.

By allowing just three goals today, Mishaw lowered his goals-against average this season to 4.48.

Today's game is only the fourth in the history of Goucher's men's lacrosse program in which the Gophers scored six or fewer goals, but still came out on top. They defeated Dickinson, 6-2, in 2003 and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy by the same score in 2010. The all-time low for goals in a win was also established in 2010 when they knocked off Scranton, 4-3.
