Gophers Spoil Presidents' Landmark Conference Debut

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's lead had shrunk to 9-6 early in the fourth quarter before head coach Kyle Hannan's squad scored three times on a two-minute, non-releasable unnecessary roughness penalty that was assessed to Washington & Jefferson. The three extra-man goals helped the Gophers achieve a 12-7 victory, spoiling the Presidents' debut in the Landmark Conference.

The Presidents (1-5, 0-1 Landmark) entered the final period trailing 9-4, but an even-strength goal by Joseph Eck and a man-up goal by Zach Wootton knocked the deficit down to 9-6. Matt Lynch (Ivyland, Pa./LaSalle College) had a hand in all three goals the Gophers (8-1, 1-0 Landmark) produced during their extended extra-man opportunity, scoring the first one and then setting up the next two.

Lynch was awarded assists on six of Goucher's 12 goals.

Two of Lynch's teammates attained significant milestones in the first 15 minutes of the contest. Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) became only the third player in the history of Goucher's men's lacrosse program to reach 200 career points when he notched the first of the five goals he tallied this afternoon.

After the Presidents tied the score at 1-1, Kyle Boncaro (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) stuck two goals in a span of less than two minutes, making him the program's all-time leader in points. Boncaro finished with four goals and an assist, giving him 229 career points, enough to pass Phil Anthony (1999-2002), who concluded his four seasons at Goucher with 225 points.

The Gophers, who are now 21-3 all-time in Landmark Conference games, led 3-2 after one period and 6-3 at the end of the first half. The first two goals of the third period were by Averett, expanding Goucher's advantage on the scoreboard to 8-3 and it took a goal by Sam Morgan (Wilmot, N.H./Kearsarge Regional) with :20 showing on the clock to make it 9-4 heading into the final 15 minutes.

The Gophers outshot the Presidents, 53-29, and scooped up 40 ground balls compared to 26 for their opponent.

Goucher's sizeable edge in shots wasn't evident in the final score because goalkeeper Ran Kirby made at least six saves in every period and ended up with a total of 25. Connor Mishaw (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) went the distance in goal for the Gophers and stopped 10 shots.
