TOWSON, Md. — Goucher put both its perfect record against Catholic and its undefeated record in Landmark Conference home games on the line when the Gophers hosted the Cardinals this afternoon.
By pinning a 14-10 setback on the Cardinals, the Gophers not only improved to 17-0 all-time in the series between the two rivals, they also picked up their 14th victory in as many Landmark Conference games played either on Beldon Field or in Gopher Stadium, as today's was.
It was also their 10th triumph in succession this season, which is the longest winning streak in the 21-year history of Goucher's men's lacrosse program.
Matt Lynch (Ivyland, Pa./LaSalle College) had a hand in all three goals as the Gophers (13-1, 4-0 Landmark) made it out of the first quarter with a 3-2 lead. The senior midfielder tallied the first two goals before picking up an assist on a goal by Kyle Boncaro (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) that snapped a 2-2 tie.
An unassisted goal by Catholic's Brian Englert 2:42 into the second period knotted the score up again at 3-3, but the tie lasted for just over three minutes before Sam Woodruff (Glen Ridge, N.J./Kent School) stuck an unassisted goal that put Goucher ahead to stay.
The Gophers, No. 14 in this week's Division III national rankings by the USILA, weren't content to be up only 4-3 at the half, however. An unassisted goal by Pierce Ingram (Austin, Texas/Westwood) with 1:47 remaining provided Goucher with a two-goal advantage and Woodruff produced another unassisted goal with :11 showing on the clock to make the score 6-3.
The two teams also came out of the third quarter still separated by three goals at 8-5 in Goucher's favor, but the Gophers began to open up some breathing room in the fourth period. They went up 9-5 on an unassisted goal by Lynch, 10-5 on an unassisted goal by Zachary Fratella (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) and 11-5 on a goal by Boncaro that was set up by Fratella.
The Cardinals (8-4, 2-2 Landmark) were able to knock their deficit back down to three by scoring three straight goals, closing to within 12-9 on a goal by Camden Feldman with 3:42 left to play, but Bryce Carson (Wyomissing, Pa./Lancaster Country Day School) restored Goucher's lead to four with an unassisted goal with 2:57 remaining.
Boncaro finished with four goals and the one that put the Gophers up 11-5 in the fourth quarter represented the 250th point of his four-year career at Goucher.
Lynch and Woodruff supplied the Gophers with three goals apiece; Englert accounted for four of Catholic's 10 goals.
