No. 19 Bullets Assume Command in Second Quarter

TOWSON, Md. — All the numbers clearly point to the second quarter being Goucher's downfall against nationally ranked Gettysburg today.

The Gophers trailed the Bullets by only one at the end of the first quarter, but over the next 15 minutes, they were outshot, 15-5, and came up short in the battle for ground balls, 13-7, plus they committed five turnovers, failed to clear the ball twice and came up empty on their only extra-man opportunity.

Those numbers played out on the scoreboard: Gettysburg outscored Goucher, 7-0, in the second period on the way to a 17-6 victory.

Sam Morgan (Wilmot, N.H./Kearsarge Regional) accounted for both of the home team's goals in the first quarter, which ended with the Bullets (2-0) leading 3-2.

Henry Tesar put Gettysburg, which entered the contest at No. 19 in the USILA Division III national rankings, up 4-2 with an unassisted goal 55 seconds into the second period. Martin Manilla had a hand in the remaining six goals the Bullets produced prior to halftime, scoring one himself and picking up assists on the other five.

Morgan notched his third goal of the game and team-leading fifth of the young season midway through the third quarter.

Goucher's final three goals came from Dylan Zook (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) in the closing seconds of the third quarter and from Max Roach (Austin, Texas/Austin) and Mark McDonald (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock North) in the final period.

Owen Demmerly (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and Sam Woodruff (Glen Ridge, N.J./Kent School) were both awarded assists on two of Goucher's goals.

Manilla ended up with six goals and six assists.

For the game, the Bullets had a 43-18 advantage in shots and the upper hand in ground balls, 44-26. With Kyle Hewett winning 14 of the 16 faceoffs he handled, they also finished with 22 faceoffs wins compared to four for head coach Brian Kelly's squad.

The Gophers (0-2) will welcome Randolph-Macon to Beldon Field this Saturday at 1 p.m.
