In-State Rival Keeps Gophers from First 2014 Win

WESTMINSTER, Md. — With Goucher trying to make up a two-goal deficit, Pierce Ingram (Austin, Texas/Westwood) got off two shots in the final minute of this afternoon's game against McDaniel.

The first one turned into the senior midfielder's fifth goal of the season and made it a one-goal game with 43 seconds still left to play. The second one, however, was prevented from going in by goalkeeper Christian Dallmus, who, with his 16th save of the contest, preserved a 7-6 victory for the Green Terror.

Goucher began the fourth quarter trailing 6-4, but an unassisted goal by Steve Patterson (Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) 4:54 into the period had the two in-state rivals separated by just a goal. Over the next seven minutes, the Gophers (0-4) outshot their opponent, 5-2, and Andrew Foster (Ashland, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) forced the Green Terror into a pair of turnovers, but head coach Brian Kelly's squad wasn't able to come up with a game-tying goal.

The two teams were never separated by more than two goals at any point during the contest. The Gophers jumped in front, 2-0, on goals by Ingram and Michael Morgan (Austin, Texas/Westwood), but the Green Terror (1-3) answered with the next four goals as they assumed a 4-2 advantage on a man-up goal by Troy Becker midway through the second quarter.

Goals by Owen Demmerly (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and Ingram less than a minute apart created a 4-4 tie, which lasted until Zach Monzo scored for McDaniel with 1:05 left to play before halftime.

A man-up goal by McDaniel's Matt Dupras accounted for all of the scoring in the third quarter, which ended with the Green Terror leading 6-4.

McDaniel finished with a slim 33-31 edge in shots, while ground balls favored Goucher, 31-27. The Green Terror scored on two of the three extra-man opportunities they were presented during the course of the game, while the Gophers went 0-for-6 in man-up situations.

Goucher gets its next chance to come up with its first victory of the season this Saturday when it welcomes King's to Beldon Field. The opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
