Solid Effort from Wiszumerski Produces 11-3 Victory
MADISON, N.J. — Karl Wiszumerski (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School), who won the battle to become Goucher's starting goalkeeper this season when the position was up for grabs following the graduation of Connor Mishaw, turned in a performance against Drew this afternoon that was reminiscent of some that made Mishaw an honorable mention Division III All-America selection in 2013.
In just the ninth start of his career, Wiszumerski made five saves in the first quarter and one more in the second to keep the Rangers from getting on the scoreboard before the Gophers. The junior finished with eight saves and allowed only two goals while playing well into the fourth period as head coach Brian Kelly's squad came away with an 11-3 Landmark Conference victory.
It wasn't until the 19th shot of the contest and the two starting goalkeepers had already made a combined total of 11 saves that Goucher took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Nate Wilinski (Decatur, Ga./Decatur). An unassisted goal by Steven Cola created a 1-1 tie midway through the second quarter, but the Gophers (4-5, 2-1 Landmark) went ahead to stay on a goal by Max Roach (Austin, Texas/Austin) with 4:16 remaining before halftime.
An extra-man goal by Roach with 1:59 left to play in the second period provided Goucher with a 3-1 advantage after 30 minutes.
All three goals scored in the third period belonged to the Gophers: an unassisted man-up goal by Steve Patterson (Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) at 11:26, an unassisted even-strength goal by Owen Demmerly (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) at 8:50 and a Roach-from-Demmerly goal at 7:34 that was set up by a caused turnover by Patterson.
Roach stuck two more goals in the fourth quarter, capping a career-best five-goal effort. The senior had never tallied more than three goals in a game prior to today. Demmerly also ended up with five points as he scored a pair of goals and picked up assists on three others.
Cola accounted for two of Drew's three goals. Kyle Mariboe started in goal for the Rangers (3-6, 1-2 Landmark) and turned away 14 shots before being lifted in the fourth quarter.
Goucher, which manged only four extra-man goals through the first eight games of the season, was 4-for-10 in man-up situations in today's contest. The Gophers outshot the Rangers, 44-23, and held a slim advantage in ground balls, 33-31.
By beating Drew, Goucher extended its current winning streak in the series between the two schools to seven games. The Gophers lead the all-time series, 10-4.
Goucher will travel to Selinsgrove, Pa. one week from today for its next game, an encounter with Susquehanna, the defending Landmark Conference champion. The opening faceoff between the Gophers and Crusaders is set for 1 p.m.
