TOWSON, Md. — Seven different Goucher players scored at least one goal — and one of them had five goals to his credit — before Washington & Jefferson managed to produce its first goal with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter tonight. The Gophers improved to 8-0 all-time against the Presidents with a 14-3 victory.
- Owen Demmerly (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) accounted for two of the three goals Goucher scored in the first quarter and three of the seven the Gophers added to their total in the second period. His sixth goal of the contest put head coach Brian Kelly's squad up 13-0 with 5:03 remaining in the third quarter.
- Washington & Jefferson became the third opponent this season that Goucher has kept off the scoreboard until the latter stages of the third quarter. Zach Fredericks tallied the first goal for the Presidents (1-7) with 4:48 remaining in the period.
- Matt Messerle (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) made his ninth consecutive start in goal for the Gophers and needed to make only three saves to keep the Presidents off the scoreboard the entire first half. The sophomore goalkeeper's goals-against average dropped to 5.91.
- Andrew Schwartz (San Antonio, Texas/St. Mary's Hall) won seven of the 11 face-offs he attempted for Goucher.
- The Gophers, the NCAA Division III co-national leaders with 24 extra-man goals this season in games played through March 20, were 1-for-2 on man-up situations in tonight's contest. Demmerly stuck the fifth of his six goals while the Presidents had a man serving a penalty for unnecessary roughness in the second quarter.
- With tonight's win, the Gophers completed a six-game homestand with a 5-1 record.
The schedule sends the Gophers (7-2) to Kings Point, N.Y. on Saturday for a Landmark Conference contest against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The opening face-off is set for 1 p.m.
