Gophers Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short at Home Against E-Town
Goucher men’s lacrosse team (3-7, Landmark 0-2) lost a close Landmark Conference game to the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College, 10-8, on Beldon Field.
TOWSON, MD – Goucher men's lacrosse team (3-7, Landmark 0-2) lost a close Landmark Conference game to the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College, 10-8, on Beldon Field.
Junior Ruel Ellis (Austin, TX) led the Gophers in points today with two goals and one assist. He also tallied four ground balls and one caused turnover. Junior Leo Sementilli (Ellicott City, MD) supplied two goals for Goucher.
The defense for the Gophers was led by junior Logan Winn (Pleasanton, CA) with four ground balls. Junior Peter Cost (Berwyn, PA) chipped in three groundballs and two caused turnovers. The Goucher defense was staunch throughout the middle periods of the game but allowed four goals early in the fourth quarter.
Junior goalkeeper Matt Messerle (Limerick, PA) had 10 saves out of the 20 shots he faced.
The Blue Jays were paced by senior Joe Clark with three goals and one assist. Clark currently leads the Landmark Conference with 43 points.
Elizabethtown's goalkeeper, freshman Tom Mahoney, had nine saves out of the 17 shots he faced.
How It Happened:
- Goucher took an early lead two minutes into the game with a goal from Ellis.
- Elizabethtown netted back-to-back goals that were quickly matched by two goals from Goucher.
- The Blue Jays scored twice before the end of the quarter, taking a 4-3 lead.
- Both teams scored one goal apiece in the second.
- Goucher took the lead, 6-5, scoring two goals within the first three minutes of the third quarter. Elizabethtown tied the game with four minutes left in the third. The game remained knotted heading into the final period.
- The Blue Jays went on a four-goal run, putting the Gophers at a 10-6 deficit.
- Goucher would close out the game with late goals from Ellis and senior Jake Ziegler (Buffalo, NY).
- Goucher held Elizabethtown from scoring on four man-down opportunities. Goucher still has yet to allow a man-up goal to an opponent during the 2017 season.
- The Gophers out groundballed the Blue Jays 30-21.
