No. 13 Gettysburg Uses Fourth Quarter Rally to Fend Off Men's Lacrosse
TOWSON, Md. - Goucher College men's lacrosse senior goalie Matt Messerle (Limerick, Pa.) made 18 saves to keep a primed Gophers squad in it all day, but a late charge by 13th-ranked Gettysburg in the fourth quarter paced the visiting Bullets to a 13-8 victory on Wednesday at Beldon Field.
TOWSON, Md. - Goucher College men's lacrosse senior goalie Matt Messerle (Limerick, Pa.) made 18 saves to keep a primed Gophers squad in it all day, but a late charge by 13th-ranked Gettysburg in the fourth quarter paced the visiting Bullets to a 14-8 victory on Wednesday at Beldon Field.
With the defeat, Goucher dropped to 1-1 overall on the year, while Gettysburg improved to 2-0.
In the contest, Gettysburg got out to an 8-5 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, the Goucher defense stiffened, as they did not allow a goal for the first 15 minutes of the second half. In the period, senior Tucker Corrigan (Avon, Conn.) and junior Grant Lasorda (Collegeville, Pa.) tallied goals, as Goucher went into the fourth and final period down just 8-7.
With 13:22 left, Goucher completed the comeback, as Corrigan scored his third goal of the match to knot things up at 8-8.
But, the visiting Bullets turned up the intensity on the defensive end over the rest of the contest, as Gettysburg scored the final six goals of the contest, unanswered, to pull away.
Overall, Corrigan and junior Zephan Harnish (Woodsboro, Md.) led the offense in the win, as they each recorded hat tricks. For Harnish, it marked the second straight contest in which he scored three goals, while Corrigan hit the three-goal mark in a game for the first time in his career (now has four goals on the year after not scoring in his first three seasons).
Elsewhere, Lasorda and fellow junior Mason Gorman (Boise, Idaho) each scored goals in the contest, while each recording an assist, as well. Corrigan had an assist, while sophomore Matt Woodson (Timonium, Md.) had two assists to lead the Gophers in that statistical column.
In net, Messerle was once again brilliant for Goucher with his 18 save performance. Messerle, who also had two ground balls in the win, came just one save short of matching his career-high for saves in a game (19), which was set during his sophomore season of 2016 at Elizabethtown.
On defense, senior Peter Cost (Berwyn, Pa.) had four forced turnovers, as the Gophers forced 14 Gettysburg turnovers throughout the contest.
The Goucher College men's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, as they host Randolph-Macon at Beldon Field. Action gets underway at 1 p.m.
