For the second time on the 2018 season, senior Matt Messerle (Limerick, Pa.) of the Goucher College men's lacrosse team has been named the Goucher College Athlete of the Week for the period ending April 22.
Messerle, who was named the Goucher Athlete of the Week previously on March 26, had a big week for the Gophers, as Goucher collected two big Landmark Conference victories on Wednesday at home against Catholic (6-5) and on the road at Drew on Saturday (9-5).
First, against Catholic, Messerle saved 17 out of the 22 shots he faced, setting a career high for save percentage in a game. He also made a huge save with 20 seconds left that preserved the one-goal victory for the Gophers, which was their first over Catholic since 2014.
In the Drew match, Messerle made six more saves in a four-goal victory. For the season, Messerle has made 160 saves (already a career-best) and posted a goals-against average of 8.58.
Messerle and the rest of the Goucher College men's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, as they host Moravian in a huge Landmark Conference match. The winner of Saturday's contest at Beldon Field will clinch a spot in the upcoming Landmark Playoffs.
The match, which is also Senior Day for the Gophers, begins at 2 p.m.
