GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sixth-ranked Gettysburg College defeated Goucher College in the men's lacrosse season opener for the Gophers on Tuesday. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but moved up a day due to the impending weather scheduled to hit the area in the coming days.
Matt Woodson (Timonium, Md./McDonough) paced the Gophers with a goal and an assist. The junior, who led the team with 27 assists and 43 points in 2018, now has 25 tallies and 32 assists for 56 points in his career.
Jeremy Buckler (Severna Park, Md./Mount St. Josephs), Zephan Harnish (Woodsboro, Md./Walkersville), Grant LaSorda (Collegeville, Pa./Germantown Academy), Jimmy Russo (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic) and Andrew Sade (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern York) each found the twine for the Gophers.
Harnish fueled the squad with 27 goals last season and now has 43 tallies for his career. Sade, who ranked second on the team last year with 25 goals, notched his 32nd career tally.
LaSorda registered 14 goals last season and now has 23 markers in his career. Buckler registered his ninth career goal while Russo notched his third career goal after scoring a tally in each of his last two campaigns.
Harnish got the scoring started for Goucher with an unassisted goal at 10:36 in the first half to cut the margin to 2-1.
LaSorda took a pass from Jared Heath (Windham, N.H./New Hampton) with 2:21 left in the first quarter to trim the deficit to 4-2. It was Heath's first collegiate point.
Goucher posted back-to-back tallies in the second quarter on a Jared Halverson (Durham, N.C./CE Jordan) to Russo with 6:57 left and then Sade found the back of the net unassisted with 6:23 left in the stanza.
Buckler scored the Gophers lone goal in the third quarter off a Woodson assist with 2:07 left in the period.
Woodson took care of an extra-man opportunity with 8:22 left in the fourth quarter for the team's fifth marker of the game.
Woodson paced the team with four ground balls and a caused turnover while Lugo and Stephen Carpenter (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) each added three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Heath, Halverston, Rashaan Evans (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) and Justin Lugo (Davie, Fla./Saint Andrews School) all made their collegiate debut in the starting lineup.
Gettysburg won the quarters by scores of 4-2, 8-2, 8-1 and 2-1 to earn the 22-6 win.
Goucher returns to action on the road at Randolph Macon on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
