Evans Scores Eventual Game-Winner, Records Hat Trick To Propel Goucher Men's Lacrosse Past Lebanon Valley, 11-10
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Rashaan Evans (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) scored the eventual game-winner with 6:15 left in the fourth quarter to lift Goucher College past Lebanon Valley College 11-10 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Holding a 10-8 lead going into the final frame, the Gophers saw the Flying Dutchmen cut the margin to one tally with 12:47 left. Evans then restored a two-marker lead with 6:15 remaining in the fourth to give Goucher an 11-9 edge. Lebanon Valley recorded a goal with 25 seconds left and won the ensuing faceoff, but the Goucher defense blocked a shot and Lukas Glaser (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) scooped up the ground ball to secure the first victory of the year.
After scoring his first collegiate tally against McDaniel College on Wednesday, Evans erupted for his first career hat trick on Saturday. Evans now has four goals and one assist for five points on the young season.
Grant Lasorda (Collegeville, Pa./Germantown Academy) also notched a career high in the game with four goals. Lasorda, who has five goals on the season, previous scored a career-best two tallies on six occasions in his previous three seasons.
Matt Woodson (Timonium, Md./McDonough) added three goals and two assists for five points. It was the junior's first hat trick of the season and third of his career. Woodson has six goals and five assists for 11 points to fuel the squad.
Goucher jumped out to a 5-3 lead after the first quarter.
After the Flying Dutchmen opened the game with a tally, the Gophers scored four of the next five markers to take a 4-2 edge. Evans tied the game at 7:54 off a feeder from Woodson before Lasorda found the back of the twine for the first time on the afternoon at 4:57 for a 2-1 lead.
Lebanon Valley tied the game 31 seconds after Lasorda's goal, but Woodson scored unassisted at 3:35 and Jared Heath (Windham, N.H./New Hampton) connected with Andrew Sade (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern York) at 2:53 for a 4-2 lead.
The two teams then traded goals with Lasorda closing out the scoring in the first stanza at 1:41 for a 5-3 lead.
The Flying Dutchmen tied the game with consecutive goals to start the second quarter, but Goucher rolled off three unanswered tallies to grab an 8-5 lead. Woodson (10:44) and Lasorda (7:28) each twinkled the twine unassisted before Woodson set up Evans for the second time on the afternoon at 6:36. Lebanon Valley scored before the intermission, but the Gophers went into the break with an 8-6 edge.
Lasorda completed his career-high day with his fourth score to start the third before the Flying Dutchmen answered with back-to-back tallies to cut the margin to 9-8 with 9:19 left in the quarter. Woodson gave Goucher a 10-8 lead going into the final quarter with an unassisted goal at 8:04.
Lebanon Valley scored two of the final goals of the game, but Evans notched the decisive score with 6:15 remaining and Glaser scooped up a ground ball after a shot to seal the win.
Justin Lugo (Davie, Fla./Saint Andrew's School) made nine saves for his first collegiate victory in between the pipes.
Stephen Carpenter (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central), Sam Gravel (Rockville, Md./St. Andrews Episcopal School) and Brandon Smith (Owings Mills, Md./Archbishop Curley) registered four ground balls and one caused turnovers each to pace the defense. Nick Patterson (East Lansing, Mich./Damonte Ranch) won 15 of 22 faceoffs in the winning effort.
Goucher returns to action on Wednesday at Beldon Field against Messiah College. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
