Woodson And Lugo Sweep The Landmark Conference Weekly Awards
BALTIMORE, Md. – Goucher College men's lacrosse swept the Landmark Conference weekly awards for the first time since 2011. Junior Matt Woodson (Timonium, Md./McDonough) has been selected as the Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Week while freshman goalkeeper Justin Lugo (Davie, Fla./Saint Andrew's School) has been tabbed as the Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of March 11-17. It is the second honor for Woodson in his career and the first for Lugo.
Woodson posted six goals and 11 assists for 17 points in a 2-1 week for the Gophers including five markers and 11 assists in the two wins. The junior posted three goals and three assists in an 18-8 win against Gordon College on Monday and then tallied two goals and a single-game program record eight assists in a 13-8 victory against Neumann University on Wednesday. Woodson had a hand in the squad's seven first half goals after registering a goal and six assists in the first 30 minutes of the game. The 10 points are the most since Conner Annunziato posted 10 points on three goals and seven assists at Millsap on February 13, 2015. Annunziato and Tim Asher, who handed out seven helpers against Lycoming on March 1, 1997 were tied for the single-game program record for assists before Woodson's career night on Wednesday. Woodson then added a goal in the loss to Frostburg State on Saturday.
Woodson leads the Landmark Conference in assists (20) while ranking second in points (33) and 10th in goals (13) in 2019. He has two hat tricks and four multiple goal games this seaon while he has dished out two or more assists in four of his last five games. For his career, the junior has 37 goals and 52 assists for 89 points.
Lugo posted 36 saves, a 9.64 goals against average and a .610 save percentage in the three games during the week including 27 saves, a 6.29 goals against average and a .711 save percentage in the two victories. The freshman made 14 saves in 45 minutes in the win against Gordon on Monday and then turned away 13 shots against Neumann on Wednesday and had nine saves against Frostburg State.
For the season, Lugo has 106 saves, an 11.51 goals against average and a .558 save percentage. He has recorded double-digit saves in six of the eight games including a career-high 16 saves against Gettysburg on February 19 and against Randolph-Macon on February 23.
Woodson was the last Goucher player to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors for the week of April 16-22, 2018 while Logan Winn was the last Defensive Player of the Week recipient for the week of April 23-29, 2018. It also marks the first time the Gophers swept the two awards since Rory Averett and Paul Taylor took home the offensive and defensive honors, respectively, for the week of March 21-27, 2011.
After playing four games in eight days, Goucher will be off this week and return to the field to open Landmark Conference action at Moravian on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
