Gorman-Heath Tandem Powers Goucher Men's Lacrosse To Victory Against Immaculata
BALTIMORE, Md. – Jared Heath (Windham, N.H./New Hampton) and Mason Gorman (Boise, Idaho/Eagle) both finished the first half with hat tricks and combined for 11 goals and three assists on the afternoon to propel Goucher College past Immaculata University 25-6 in. non-conference men's lacrosse action on Friday.
Heath got the scoring started with a goal at 12:47 in the first quarter and then found the twine unassisted at 8:14 to give the Gophers a 2-1 lead.
The second quarter could have been brought to you by the law firm of Gorman Heath as the duo scored four of the five Goucher goals of the period. Gorman tied the game off a feed from Grant Lasorda (Collegeville, Pa./Germantown Academy) at the 11-minute mark before Heath gave the hosts the lead it would not relinquish off a pass from Brady O'Neill (Elkton, Md./Elkton) 53 seconds later to complete his hat trick. Gorman then scored unassisted at 9:17 and 5:12 for a 7-4 lead. Nigel Bowden (Rosedale, Md./Archbishop Curley) scored unassisted to give Goucher an 8-4 lead at the break.
Heath added three goals in the final 78 seconds of the third quarter after twinkling the twine at 1:18, 0:34 and 0:13 and also added assists Gorman's goals at 8:56 and 2:43 in the third to finish the game with a career-high six goals and two assists while Gorman finished with five tallies and one assist after dishing out an assist on Lasorda's goal to start the fourth quarter.
Heath notched his second straight multi-goal performance and his fourth of the season while registering his third game with at least three markers. The freshman now has 18 goals and nine assists for 27 points to now rank third on the team. Gorman tied a career high with five goals, a total he also scored against Moravian College in his freshman campaign. It was the senior's 10th career multi-goal performance and fifth game with at least three tallies in a contest.
O'Neil had a career-best four goals and one assist for five points while Nigel Bowden and Jared Halverson (Durham, N.C./CE Jordan) recorded their first mult-goal contests of their collegiate careers.
Lasorda added two goals and one assist while Tyler Allnutt (Frederick, Md./Linganore) posted his second career goal against the Mighty Macs and a career-best two helpers including setting up his roommate O''Neill in the fourth quarter.
Jackson Bybee (Bluffdale, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic), Josh Finglass (Decatur, Ga./The Galloway School) and Ben Smith (Parkville, Md.) all notched their first collegiate goal in the contest. Bybee's goal was pretty impressive, almost like his journey from Utah to Goucher, after he intercepted a pass in the defensive end and went coast-to-coast to score with his long pole unassisted 1:24 into the second half. Finglass scored off a Mike Del Vecchio (Worchester, Pa./Methacton) assist at 8:49 in the fourth quarter and Smith posted the game's final goal off a feeder from Allnutt with 4:05 left in the game.
Along with Del Vecchio, Eric Bowden (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall), Rashaan Evans (Salisbury, Md./Parkville) and Lukas Glazer (Ringwood, N.J./Lakewood Regional) also registered assists on the afternoon.
Sam Gravel (Rockville, Md./St. Andrews Episcopal School) paced the defense with eight ground balls and a career-high seven caused turnovers while Mick Togo (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) registered six ground balls and Brandon Smith (Owings Mills, Md./Archbishop Curley) posted five ground balls and a caused turnover.
Alex Shields (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) made nine saves in 53:24 minutes of work while Robert Carrigan (Sparrows Point, Md./Sparrows Point) made three saves to close out the game.
Hunter Opdyke (Salisbury, Md./The Salisbury School) was 18-for-32 in faceoffs.
After Gorman and Heath staked the Gophers out the lead at the break, Goucher used a 9-2 third quarter and an 8-0 fourth quarter to complete a 25-6 win.
The win was the fourth-straight home non-conference win for the Gophers while it also snapped a six-game losing streak.
Goucher closes out the season on Saturday, April 27 at home against Drew University. Game time is 1 p.m. The senior class will be honored before the game.
