Woodson's 100th-Career Point Helps Goucher Men's Lacrosse Ground Flying Dutchmen And Leap To 9-7 Win
BALTIMORE, Md. – Matt Woodson (Timonium, Md./McDonough) gave Goucher College the lead with two goals while Ben Smith (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) extended the margin with the next four Gopher goals to help Goucher ground Lebanon Valley College 9-7 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Woodson tied the game at 1 off a Julian Schemm (Sykesville, Md./Century) assist at 8:40 and then scored unassisted at 4:15 in the first quarter to give the Gophers the lead they would not relinquish. Smith then scored the next four Goucher goals to give the squad a 6-3 lead.
Woodson finished the week with six tallies and two assists after posting the identical numbers in a 12-8 win against McDaniel on Wednesday. With his goal at the 4:15 mark in the first quarter, the senior reached 100 career points in his career and now has 46 markers and 57 assists for 103 points in 37 games. It was his 14th multigoal performance, fifth hat trick and eighth game with at least five points in his career.
Smith now has nine goals this season after his career-high four-goal performance on Saturday. The sophomore notched his second hat trick of the season and third-straight multigoal game.
After going 13 of 24 against the Green Terror on Wednesday, Nick Patterson (East Lansing, Mich./Damonte Ranch) was even more impressive against the Flying Dutchmen, going 13-for-17 on faceoffs. Justin Lugo (Davie, Fla./St. Andrew's School) matched a career high in saves with 23 stops that he established at Moravian on March 23, 2019. Sam Gravel (Rockville, Md./St. Andrews Episcopal School) paced the defense with a season-high six ground balls and six caused turnovers.
After Lebanon Valley took an early 1-0 lead, Goucher scored the four goals to take the lead for good.
Schemm notched his first collegiate assist to set up Woodson at 8:40 to tie the game at 1 and put Woodson on the doorsteps of a milestone. The senior then reached the 100-point mark all by himself at 4:15 in the first quarter for a 2-1 edge.
Rashaan Evans (Salisbury, Md./Parkside), who tied a career high of three assists he set on Wednesday, set up Smith at 4:06 and then Smith picked up a loose ball and twinkled the twine at 2:03 to end the first quarter scoring with the host leading 4-1.
Smith answered a Flying Dutchmen goal in the second quarter unassisted at 6:26 to give Goucher a 5-2 lead at the break.
Lebanon Valley started the scoring in the third-straight period, but the Gophers scored the next three tallies to grab an 8-3 advantage.
Evans connected with Smith for the second time on the day at 2:37 before Woodson set up Andrew Sade (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern York) with the clock running down in the third quarter.
Woodson completed the hat trick off Evans' third helper of the afternoon to start the final quarter with 10:02 on the clock for the five-goal edge.
After a Flying Dutchmen marker, Woodson returned the first-quarter favor to Schemm with two minutes remaining for a 9-4 lead. Lebanon Valley scored three times in the final 47 seconds to set the final score to 9-7.
Eddie Jancuk (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) and Kyle Ramos (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase) each had four ground balls and a caused turnover.
While Goucher men's lacrosse tangled and beat Lebanon Valley, Monday March 2 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Goucher men's basketball stunning win against the defending national champions in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament for the college's first-ever NCAA Tournament win. The Gophers opponent was the Flying Dutchmen.
Goucher men's lacrosse returns to action on Wednesday against an old Capital Athletic Conference opponent in Marymount University. Game time is 7 p.m.
