Woodson Is Once, Twice, Three Times A Landmark Conference Men's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete Of The Week
BALTIMORE, Md. – Matt Woodson (Timonium, Md./McDonough), a member of the Goucher College men's lacrosse team, became the first Landmark Conference Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week in three-straight weeks after garnering the honor for the week of March 9-15, 2020. It was the third time this season Woodson earned the honor and the fifth-time in his career.
If it was Woodson's last collegiate game, it will be one to remember after he scored the decisive goal with 1:33 left in overtime in a 10-9 win against Neumann on Wednesday. The senior finished the game with three goals and three assists to help the Gophers win four of their last five games. Woodson continued to get a hot start in the first half by having a hand in Goucher's first three goals thanks to a goal and two assists. He then posted a goal and an assist in the third quarter to give the team its largest lead at 9-6 before tallying the decisive goal in OT.
Woodson leads the team with 20 goals and 14 assists for 34 points while also fueling the Landmark Conference in points and ranking second in goals and fourth in assists. In his last three weeks, the senior has posted four hat tricks and a career-high five markers in his last five games while also dishing out two assists three times, three helpers and four helpers once each. He has also posted two five-point games, one six-point performance and two seven-point contests in that stretch.
For his career, Woodson has 57 goals and 66 assists for 123 points. He has eight two-goal games, seven three-tally performances along with a four and five goal game apiece. For assists, Woodson has eight two-helpers contests, six three-assist games, four four-assist performances and a single-game program-record eight assists against Neumann last year. Woodson has registered three points six times, four points three times, five points four times along with one six, seven and 10-point performance each.
Woodson becomes the first player in conference history to earn the offensive honor for three-straight weeks. The Gophers won the top offensive weekly award three-straight weeks to end the 2010 season after Kyle Boncaro took home the honor for the weeks of April 26, 2010 and Rory Averett received the recognition for the week of May 10, 2010. That season, Averett came close to three-straight honors after garnering the accolade in three out of four weeks.
It is the fifth time the senior has garnered the league's top offensive player of the week award after also receiving the honor for the weeks of April 16-22, 2018, March 11-17, 2019, February 24-March 1, 2020 and March 2-8, 2020. Woodson is now one of three players in program history to earn five weekly honor awards, joining Averett (6) and Connor Mishaw (5).
In consultation with the eight Presidents of the Landmark Conference, all scheduled Landmark competition from Saturday, March 14 through Sunday, April 5 has been postponed. The member institutions continue to monitor the COVID-19 outbreak and its impact on all campus events and student activities, including athletics. The conference via Twitter on Friday that despite the cancelation of all winter and spring NCAA postseason tournaments, the conference remains committed to exploring opportunities for the spring student-athletes and programs.
