Goucher Athletics Announces Coaches Award Winner
BALTIMORE, Md. – Matt Woodson (Timonium, Md./McDonough), a member of the Goucher College men's lacrosse team, has been named the Coaches Award winner.
The Coaches Award is given annually to the senior athlete that has most completely represented Goucher College throughout his/her athletic career. Factors involved in the selection of the winner includes accomplishments at his or her sport or sports, including awards and honored garnered for his/her athletic ability, and displayed leadership skills toward his/her teammates.
"Thank you for considering me worthy of the Coaches Award," said Woodson. "I would like to thank first and foremost my team for being there for me for pushing themselves especially after my whole injury process. I think that leadership with my team came easy because they backed me up and the coaches did the same."
Woodson was on his way to another career year before COVID-19 ended his season and career. He led the team in goals (20), assists (14) and points (34) while leading the Landmark Conference in points and second in goals and fourth in assists. He was named conference offensive athlete of the week an unprecedented three-consecutive weeks. He notched a career-high five goals against Arcadia on March 7 and posted three goals and three assists in a 10-9 overtime thrilling victory against Neumann on March 11 including scoring the game-winning goal in overtime in what would be his final collegiate game.
"What a career you had with many different milestones to be thankful for and grateful that I was a part of and witnessing on the lacrosse field," said head coach Brian Kelly. "You did a lot of great things at Goucher that I am so proud of and I am so excited to see what you do next in your career. I know that you are going to make Goucher proud in all that you do!"
For his career, Woodson played in 40 games including 36 starts with 57 goals and 66 assists, 123 points, 80 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. Averaging over 3.0 points per game in his career, he reached 100 points in his career with a goal with 4:15 left in the first quarter against Lebanon Valley on February 29. He was named to the all-conference first team in his sophomore campaign after leading the Gophers to a postseason berth while the team was 19-21 in games that he played including 18-16 in his last 34 games and 16-14 when he registered a goal in a game. He dished out a single-game program record eight assists in a 13-8 win against Neumann on March 13, 2019. Named a conference offensive athlete of the week five times in his career, Woodson also excels in the classroom with a 3.70 grade point average to be named to the Landmark Conference Honor Roll all three years of eligibility.
Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominion) (men's tennis), Cherise Madrid (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) (equestrian) and Shannon Stull (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) (women's lacrosse) were also nominated for the Coaches Award.
