GRANTHAM, Pa. - Goucher overcame a 2-0 deficit in the second half thanks to goals by Julien Greco (Shutesbury, MA/St. George's School) and Jay Berger (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan), but the final goal of the contest belonged to Grove City and allowed the Wolverines to down the Gophers, 3-2, today at the Messiah College Soccer Classic.
Grove City, which failed to score in either of its first two games of the season, grabbed a 1-0 lead midway through the first half on a goal by Chuck Witt. The freshman midfielder also accounted for the Wolverines' second goal, putting his team ahead 2-0 when he scored at 56:45.
The Gophers (2-1) closed to within 2-1 at 63:58 on Greco's goal, which was the sophomore forward's third of the season, and then pulled into a 2-2 tie at 74:22 on Berger's goal, the first of the freshman midfielder's collegiate career.
Evan Rosse (Bedford, MA/Bedford) and Andrew Eden (Sandy Spring Friends School) were awarded assists on Greco's and Berger's goals, respectively.
Only 2:01 was showing on the clock when a goal by Grove City's Matt Sol broke the 2-2 tie.
The Gophers suffered their first loss of the season despite finishing with a 13-10 advantage in shots.
It was the first meeting between Goucher and Grove City in the sport of men's soccer.
