Scoreless Tie Holds Up into Final Minute of RegulationOct. 13, 2007
TOWSON, Md. - Goucher appeared headed to overtime for a third time this season when today's Landmark Conference game on Beldon Field against U.S. Merchant Marine Academy was still scoreless entering the final minute of regulation. But overtime was averted when Chris Flanagan tallied his fourth goal of the season with just :32 showing on the clock to lift the Mariners past the Gophers, 1-0.
Ben Inouye was awarded an assist on Flanagan's game-winning goal.
Although the Gophers (4-8-1, 0-3-1 Landmark) were out-shot, 11-4, in the second half, they had more scoring chances than the Mariners (9-5, 4-1 Landmark). USMMA goalkeeper Preston Stokes had to make saves on three of Goucher's four shots over the final 45:00 to keep the game scoreless, while none of the Mariner's first 10 shots of the period were on goal.
Justin Holbrook (Claymont, DE/Wilmington Friends School) went the distance in goal for Goucher and finished with five saves, all in the first half.
The loss was the Gophers' fifth by a single goal and their first at home all season.
