TOWSON, Md. - Goucher entered today's game against Catholic as the highest-scoring team in the Landmark Conference, averaging 2.31 goals per game. But the Gophers failed to score against the Cardinals in the first half and trailed 1-0 at the break.
In the second half, however, Goucher started clicking on offense and produced three goals in a span of 11:47. The Gophers also kept Catholic off the scoreboard over the final 68:18 to earn a 3-1 victory.
Although the Cardinals (6-8, 2-3 Landmark) were out-shot, 10-6, in the first half, they took a 1-0 lead midway through the period on a goal by Brian Pappas.
An unassisted goal by Chris Herting (Chalfont, PA/Germantown Academy) at 64:15 created a 1-1 tie and the Gophers (5-8-1, 1-3-1 Landmark) went ahead on a goal by Evan Rosse (Bedford, MA/Bedford) at 70:01 that was set up by Galen Guindon (Wallingford, PA/Friends Central).
Goucher's lead grew to 3-1 at 76:02 when Herting tallied his fifth goal of the season off an assist from Julien Greco (Shutesbury, MA/St. George's School).
The Gophers finished with a 20-13 advantage in shots in the battle between the two teams that left the Capital Athletic Conference to be in the Landmark Conference. Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Holbrook (Claymont, DE/Wilmington Friends School) made five saves and lowered his goals-against average to 1.90.
