OT Goal Ruins Freshman GK's 10-Save Performance
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. — Freshman goalkeeper Joe Kon (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) made three saves in the first half and stopped an additional six shots in the second period, but his efforts during 90 minutes of regulation only got Goucher through to overtime against Ursinus today.
Kon made yet another save in the second of two 10-minute extra sessions, but that's also where Jean Carlo Cordova got off a shot that sailed over Kon's head and into the back of the cage to provide the Bears with an immediate 1-0 victory over head coach Bryan Laut's Gophers.
The two teams combined to take only five shots in the opening period, but both picked it up on offense following the break. While Kon's save total stood at nine at the end of regulation, his counterpart, Mike Alfieri, was credited with three saves over 90 minutes.
The Gophers (4-10) had several scoring opportunities in the first OT as Alfieri had to stop shots by junior midfielder T.J. Yumoto (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) and senior midfielder Jay Berger (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan), and the Ursinus defense had to make a play on a header by freshman midfielder Woody Black (Great Barrington, Mass./Monument Mountain).
Cordova tallied his game-winning goal at 104:00. Both of the wins the Bears (2-10) have achieved this season have been in double overtime.
