FREDERICK, Md. — After coming close to scoring once or twice in the opening 45 minutes, Goucher displayed a more determined effort to get on the scoreboard in the second half of this afternoon's season-opening contest against Hood.
That determination was rewarded just 35 seconds into the period after sophomore forward Parker Bay and freshman forward Kevin Tonkovich both had shots blocked before Bay was able to finish, putting the rebound from Tonkovich's attempt into the net. Bay's goal put the Gophers up 1-0 and they went on to defeat the Blazers, 2-0.
Goucher's second goal was set up by junior forward Nate Margolis, who lofted a free kick from 30 yards out that freshman midfielder Tate Becker was able to head past the opposing keeper.
Margolis was credited with 14 assists during his first two seasons with the Gophers and now sits at No. 6 on Goucher's all-time list for career assists.
Scoring opportunities were few and far between for both teams in the first half as they combined for just 11 shots. Bay hit a post with the only shot he got off in the period.
The Blazers (0-1) were unable to generate anything on offense during the second half as they were outshot 16-0.
Ethan DeBandi went the distance in goal for the Goucher, earning the shutout by making two saves in the first half.
The last time the Gophers (1-0) opened a season on the road with a victory was 2009 when they knocked off Hood, 1-0.
